Program Lead

Manaola Yap

Inspired by his cultural upbringing as a native Hawaiian hula practitioner, self-taught fashion designer Manaola Yap translates Hawaiian spirituality and Hawai’i’s natural beauty into prints that embody repetitious patterns found in nature. Manaola Yap was born into a family whose cultural and artistic roots run deep into the volcanic soil of Hawai‘i Island. For generations before contact with the West, his ancestors were hula practitioners and artisans of traditional Hawaiian textiles and dyes; more recently, his family has become known for its award-winning musical talent. Raised amid this tradition of creativity, Manaola stands upon the strong foundation laid out by his kūpuna (ancestors). Featuring bold, printed patterns that embody the Hawaiian spirit and evoke the beauty and geometry of nature, this brand introduces to the world Manaola’s vision for Hawaiian fashion in the 21st century.

Program Overview

Pacific Pāʻū Showcase: June 7

This event serves as a focal point for honoring the traditional and contemporary significance of Pāʻū (skirts) across the Pacific region. Pāʻū, historically associated with traditional dance attire, have evolved to encompass a broader spectrum of cultural expression and wearable art.

Each participating country will have the opportunity to present two distinct looks during the showcase: one featuring a traditional Pāʻū and another highlighting a contemporary interpretation. This dual presentation offers a nuanced exploration of the evolution of Pāʻū design and its cultural resonance in the modern context.

Showcase Format: The Pacific Pāʻū Showcase will be the main keystone fashion event of the FestPAC program. This fully produced fashion show will feature curated presentations that encapsulate the diversity and vibrancy of Pacific fashion. From intricate traditional motifs to avant-garde contemporary designs, the showcase promises to be a captivating celebration of indigenous creativity.

Fashion Showcases (daily)

In addition to the Pacific Pāʻū Showcase, participating countries are encouraged to register in advance for other fashion show slots throughout the festival. These rolling opportunities provide a platform for countries to showcase the full spectrum of their fashion designers and artisans. Whether it's on the Festival Village main stage or other designated venues, these showcases offer a dynamic space for cultural exchange and collaboration.
